Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN)(NASDAQ:WILN) has acquired a portfolio of semiconductor patents from IXYS CH GmbH related to microcontroller technology, the company said on Tuesday.
The Ottawa-based intellectual property licencer said the portfolio's technology has applications in the aerospace, medical, industrial and automotive markets.
According to terms of the deal, a share of the revenue generated from licensing the acquired patents will be paid to IXYS, Wi-LAN said in a statement.
"We are pleased to have acquired these patents from IXYS," said Jim Skippen, Wi-LAN's president and chief executive officer. "The portfolio is an example of the quality patents that we seek to license. We assess many possible acquisitions but are very selective in the patents that we will bring into our semiconductor licensing program."
Wi-LAN did not disclose financial terms of the agreement.
Shares of Wi-LAN jumped 1.5% on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The stock's choppy trajectory over the past year has seen it move between a $2.96 to $5.07 range.
